A Specialist Dental Practice on your doorstep in St John's Wood

We care for all your dental needs, from your child’s first teeth to dental restorations

Dental Treatments

At 55a Dental we offer high quality general dental care for the whole family, from young children through to older generations. Our St John’s Wood practice is a warm and welcoming environment and is fully equipped with the latest state-of-the art dental equipment for efficient and caring treatment.

The prevention of problems such as tooth decay or gum disease is essential to maintain a healthy mouth and this is always preferable than to cure. At times, when active restorative treatment is necessary due to early stage dental decay, it can usually be resolved with a minimal tooth coloured dental filling. Larger areas of decay or where a tooth has broken, may require more elaborate treatment such as a dental crown to restore strength, function and appearance.

Our range of general dental treatments is fully comprehensive including:

  • Fillings
  • Crown and bridgework
  • Porcelain veneers
  • Dental implants
  • Gum treatments
  • Extractions
  • Facial Aesthetics

Professional teeth cleaning

Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is extremely important, and in addition to regular checks with our dentists, we also recommend that you visit one of our hygienist’s on a regular basis to help you keep them in good condition.

55a Dental have hygiene treatments for children through to advanced treatments of Gum Disease in conjunction with Periodontal treatment.

A thorough clean with our hygienist, in conjunction with diligent personal care, will help to prevent gum disease, remove surface staining from your teeth and leave your mouth feeling fresh and clean.

They will also discuss lifestyle choices, such as smoking, drinking and diet as well as how any illnesses that you may have, such as diabetes, can impact upon your oral health and how to keep risks to a minimum.

Teeth whitening is one of our most popular professional and personalised cosmetic dental treatments here at 55a Dental practice, and it  produces very fresh white looking teeth. Our whitening treatments are minimally invasive and affordable in price.

How does it work?

Most discolouration of the teeth actually occurs in the soft inner part, rather than the surface. For this reason, no amount of brushing will rectify the problem. Instead, a bleaching agent is used which gradually lightens the inner part of the tooth.

The teeth whitening procedure

First we take very accurate impressions of your teeth to produce your individual bleaching trays. These are designed to fit comfortably and securely over your teeth so that the bleaching agent does not leak onto the lips and gums. We will discuss just how white you wish your new smile to be and supply you with the appropriate strength bleaching gel to achieve the desired outcome. We will guide you on how to use the trays and gel and how long to wear the trays for. At the end of this procedure, your teeth will be much whiter than before and we are sure you will feel more confident with your new smile too. We are aware that many patients prefer to avoid the brilliant white ‘celebrity’ smile and we can design your treatment accordingly.

Some of 55a Dental's most popular cosmetic dental procedures that we offer are:

  • Teeth Whitening: Our most popular cosmetic dental procedure. We now use the Enlighten method.
  • Dental Veneers: For patients with severely stained, chipped or cracked teeth, veneers are very fine layers of porcelain which are used to replace the damaged surface of the affected teeth to help create near-perfect, natural looking smiles.
  • Orthodontics: We have modern orthodontics available which not only work faster than the traditional versions, but are made of almost invisible materials, enabling you to have even teeth without the unappealing appearance of old-style metal braces.
  • Invisalign:
  • Dental Implants: Implants are excellent for improving overall mouth function, and offer great cosmetic benefits for anyone seeking to replace a missing tooth, or teeth.

55a Dental provides specialist orthodontic treatment for all ages. We believe that it is never too late to straighten your teeth and taking care of your smile is a part of taking care of yourself. It will give you great confidence. Whether you have crooked or misaligned teeth we can use orthodontic treatment to restore your smile.

Orthodontic fixed Braces

  • Fixed Orthodontic braces are attached to the teeth on to the outside surfaces.
  • These are suitable for most orthodontic cases and are suitable for patients all ages.
  • The advances in orthodontic technology has meant that you can have ceramic brackets which are less visible.

Lingual Braces Incognito

  • Lingual braces can treat every dental problem that can be treated by traditional braces.
  • Lingual braces are attached to the inside surfaces of the teeth so not easily seen.
  • Lingual braces can, in some cases, have limitations and may not be suitable for everyone. This will be discussed on your assessment

Invisalign™ teeth aligners are not just more discrete than traditional metal braces. They’re also more comfortable, more hygienic and less disruptive. You don’t need to change your eating habits, your speech is not affected, and the treatment is virtually pain-free. All our dentists at 55a Dental  have official Invisalign accreditation, have been trained extensively in delivering the best possible service and are led by our specialist Orthodontist.

Why Choose Invisalign?

  • Simulation software shows you the results of your treatment before you even begin.
  • Clear aligners are virtually invisible
  • Aligners are removable for easy cleaning, eating and important functions.
  • Fewer visits: once every 6-8 weeks
  • Change to new fresh aligners every week
  • Little irritation to gums or mouth

55a Dental takes periodontal health very seriously, as if left untreated this can lead to loss of teeth and illness.

Treating gum disease in its early stages is very important, as the disease will slowly begin to attack the supportive structure of the teeth.

Gum disease is preventable with good oral hygiene and professional cleaning with regular dental hygiene visits. Advanced perio (gum) disease can be a burden for many patients, especially those of us who fear a visit to the dentist. Left untreated however, can lead to other more serious health issues in the longer term.

Patients who may be worried about having root canal treatment need not be as modern root canal treatments at 55a Dental minimise discomfort.

Before the procedure starts, the relevant area of your mouth will be numbed using a local anaesthetic. Once this has taken effect, the dentist will then remove part of the top section of the tooth to allow access to the canals. The infected soft pulp is removed and the hollow chamber then thoroughly cleaned to remove any remaining bacteria. Once this has been done, the canals are filled with a special dental filling known as Gutta Percha. Finally, a dental crown will be added to the tooth to restore natural appearance and provide additional strength.

Dental implants have many advantages over bridges and dentures, such as stability, longevity and comfort. 55a Dental has a visiting specialist dentist, who is an extremely skilled and experienced surgeon and who limits his practice entirely to placing implants.

Dental implants are effectively artificial tooth roots which are made from titanium and is positioned in the jaw by means of a minor oral surgical procedure. It is then left to bond with the bone in a process known as osseointegration, forming an extremely solid foundation to support a dental crown.

Implants may be placed individually or in multiples depending on the number of missing teeth, An entire jaw can be restored, sometimes with only 4 implants. This is known as the All-on-4 Technique and can often be undertaken over the course of just one day.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth that come through as we grow up, usually between the ages of 16 and 24. Whilst these are useful teeth for grinding and chewing food, if they do not erupt correctly, and remain impacted in the jaw, it is often beneficial or even necessary to remove them.

When Do Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Removed?

There are a number of indicators which suggest that removal of a wisdom teeth may be advisable, these include:
  • When the wisdom teeth erupt at an angle which is not useful for chewing food. Teeth misaligned in this way may also suffer uneven wear which may, in turn, weaken them.
  • Where the wisdom tooth has only partially erupted. This makes them significantly harder to clean, leaving them more susceptible to decay and gum disease.
  • Where it is deemed that they may cause damage to other teeth.
  • To reduce the risks associated with cyst formation. This is more likely to happen around an impacted tooth.
  • Where a partially erupted tooth causes gum pain or soreness.

Generally, wisdom teeth are best extracted as early in their formation as possible. As the roots may not be fully formed at this stage, it makes the procedure easier to perform, making it less uncomfortable for the patient.
